I've been caught up with working on a website redesign for From Python Import Podcast and was feeling pretty tapped out on creativity on Saturday. I felt like this shot was a little half-hearted, and didn't care for all the visual noise in the background and how it detracted from the colors of the pinwheel that Claire had planted in our front garden. Somehow that led me to remembering that turning most of the image black-and-white to emphasize a brightly-colored object was a thing, and I decided to give it a go since I'd never tried it. Claire sat on my lap and helped make the selection in Photoshop, dutifully warning me whenever the Quick Selection Tool had "eaten up" any of the colored bits that we wanted to preserve.
I'm not sure I would do this very often, but I'm pretty satisfied with the result.
