The Upside of Influenza

I spent the better part of a week in bed with a nasty case of influenza--chills, aches, sweats, nausea, digestive "issues", 102.9 degree fever--the works. And once again, everyone in my family had the great taste to all get sick at the exact same time, so you can imagine the fun that Liz and I had trying to comfort and care for Claire while we were clobbered by the bug.

But! Surprise, surprise! It turns out that even influenza can have a silver lining or two.

First, I lost six pounds, which is nice in the wake of holiday indulgence and a baby-driven complete lack of regular exercise routine.

More importantly, I now know what's happening to my sock drawer.

About once a week, I find my sock drawer in disarray, half-open and mixed-up, with two or three pairs on the floor in front of the dresser. I'd been wondering why and how for a while. Luckily, when one spends a week in bed with said dresser in direct view, one gets a chance to observe the cause and culprit first-hand--namely, Valentine the cat. She's figured out how to open the drawer, then jumps up onto the dresser and starts digging in the socks until she's satisfied with the disaster she's caused. I watched her steal four pairs of socks before she finally got bored and dashed off to chase her sister. I just about died laughing.

I know I sound like a broken record--but I'd really love to have a couple weeks or even a month of 2008 in which I'm not being devastated by the illness of the week.

Being Dad

There are lots of great photos from the past couple of days as we've adjusted to life with Claire (and Claire has adjusted to life with us), but I only had time to upload this and a couple others: another shot of the two of us snuggling, and--more importantly--the cats' curiosity beginning to win out over their fear.

Clearly, I need a new LiveJournal icon...

What The--?!?

I Are Curiosity!

The cats are astoundingly curious, not even interested in their favorite toys. Valentine in particular is hypnotically fascinated by the wriggling little pink thing that keeps making soft kitten noises. Julia is suddenly developing a whole new vocabulary of her own, emitting tiny, questioning tones nearly identical to those of her new sister.

For now, it's time to rest, and settle into our new routine, and then we'll see what life has in store for us.

My Claws, They Have a Wrath

Liz's Rotary group gave us a very lovely gift basket this week. We freed the balloons and let the cats have at them for some supervised play. I shot a little video before switching over to the DSLR. I hoped to get one or two cute shots, but this is by far the runaway gem of the lot.

Apparently balloons are Valentine's mortal enemy. Who knew?

This Little Piggy

After a long day of fighting with Safari issues and worrying about shipping my monitor off for repair, I was rewarded with a lovely dinner with my wife, a surprise early result from the frame shop, a little bit of work in the baby room (hung pictures, hooked up the old iMac), and then... photo opportunities!

First, Valentine got a turn in the baby chair, which she has so far been uninterested in. But after a brief but non-violent dispute, she reneged and Julia tucked in to play and relax.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of my new 50mm prime lens, though I think it might be just about time for a flash to try to balance out the harsh light of the CFLs that we've been switching to. This is also probably just about the point where Liz will begin to regret encouraging me to get a hobby. :-)

I Can Has Stroller Ride?

I Can Has Stroller Ride?

Continuing our habit of being far too organized, we did a final stroller test-drive today at Stroller Mama's showroom, where we decided that we liked the UPPAbaby Vista so much that we should just give up and get one. So we did.

After stopping for a much-needed car wash, we got the UPPA home, where the cats delighted in providing their particular brand of assistance at each step of the assembly and testing. (Yes, we took them for a ride around the house in it. No, we didn't trust the netting enough to take them outside in it.)

I like the UPPA a lot--it assembled quickly, collapses nicely, and our car seat plugs in conveniently.

Numerous photos start here.

(And there are more cute cat photos if you need them.)

Oh, and my computer is still alive--turns out I'd blown a DIMM somehow. The nice Apple Store folks swapped in two fresh sticks and all's well again (and just in time for my speakers to dramatically short out at four AM this morning, but that's another story).

Fulfilling the Promise of the Internet

In accordance with the principle that the Internet is mostly filled with photos of people's cats doing cute things, here's Valentine, perched daintily on the laser printer in our office.

Pop on over to Flickr for more photos of the cats being their adorable little selves, and some decent shots of my now-ruined daffodils, who dared to think that spring had come to stay.
